Mukono Children's Home and Primary School
Mukono Children's Home is a non-government owned institution, by which the Department of Welfare in Uganda identifies children through referrals to be sent to the Home - the children come from many different backgrounds, most are orphaned due to Malaria/AIDs.
The children are aged 3-18. There are 500+ children in total, 380 are primary aged children who live here and attend the on-site school, the older children live here but go to school elsewhere. Once children reach 18 they are encouraged to gain independent financial stability, but the Home is always there for them as their base if it is needed.
Volunteer Role
The Home would like to set up a 'Big Brother/Sister' scheme for primary aged children, this will be your primary role as a volunteer. You will be paired with one or two specific children to provide one-to-one support building a strong bond with a needy individual. You will work with them in classes which the child struggles in as well as provide them with someone to confide in and helping them to develop their English. Educational support may involve aiding their learning in class or taking them out of class to do similar work in a different way to aid the childs learning experience - this may be achieved through play for example.
Volunteers wil also;
* Teach specific subjects depending on ytheir knowledge and skills
* Teach sport/play games with the children both as pat of the school day and during free time
* Be encouraged to share any specific interests/skills they have with the children, for example, in art and music
* Aid painting/maintenance within the home
* Teach computer skills
This placement is a great opportunity to create a unique bond with a child in need of help, as well as assist and learn about life in a Ugandan children's home
